1,000 people get COVID shot through Pelican Bay vaccine site

COLLIER COUNTY, Fla. – One thousand people got their vaccine at the Pelican Bay Community Center Tuesday. The vaccines were administered by the North Collier Fire Control and Rescue District.

North Collier Fire said they’ve vaccinated ten thousand people since vaccines were distributed. Deputy Chief Jorge Aguilera believes it wouldn’t be possible if they did not have an advanced life support service license.

“What was a battle years ago to provide care to the street turned out to be the key to be able to help our community during this pandemic,” Aguilera said.

Aguilera confirmed they are the only fire district in Southwest Florida getting the vaccine directly from the state. From fighting fires to putting shots in people’s arms, fire crews are doing it all.

“The fire chief has given us two directives other than running 911 calls, vaccinating our community is the next most important thing for us,” Aguilera said.

These firefighters say they’re just doing their job but to others, they are heroes, saving lives one shot at a time.

“People changing their job description a little bit to fit the needs of the public like that, it’s inspiring, it makes you realize you have a good community you are a part of and these people care a lot more than just themselves,” said Collier County Resident Duncan McManus.

300 of the vaccines administered Tuesday were for Collier County teachers.

“It’s critical, they are like us, they provide a service to their community, the work for us and the communities. They got key roles getting them back into the classroom where they feel safe is also very important,” Aguilera said.

Anyone living in Collier County and registered on time was able to get the shot Tuesday. Pelican Bay provided the facility and volunteers to get the clinic up and running.

“They committed to being a community partner which means it’s not just people from their community here, there are people from all over the entire county,” Aguilera said.

You can register for their next clinic on April 20 at the Naples Church off Immokalee Road by clicking here.
