Caught on camera: Wrong-way driver hops median in Collier County
COLLIER COUNTY, Fla. — A wrong-way driver in Naples was caught on camera by a fellow motorist on Tuesday night.
Grace Lebas said she was driving on Vanderbilt Beach Road near Airport Pulling Road around 8:30 p.m. when she noticed the wrong-way driver.
Lebas grabbed her phone and started recording the driver that was heading east in the westbound lanes of Vanderbilt Beach Road.
As the vehicle approached oncoming traffic, the driver hops a median to avoid a crash.

When driving at night, officials with Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles encourage motorists to stay in the right lane whenever possible to avoid a crash with a wrong-way driver.
The majority of wrong way crashes, vehicles are hit head-on, resulting in 81 percent of all wrong way fatalities.
“If someone sees someone driving the wrong way, driving on the sidewalk those types of reckless actions certainly call 911. So we can respond and get that person to respond before anyone gets hurt,” Lt. Greg Bueno said.
Here are some additional tips to avoid crashing into a wrong-way driver:
- If you see a wrong-way driver approaching, immediately reduce your speed and pull off the roadway. Call 911 immediately to report wrong-way drivers.
- Stay alert – do not drive distracted. Never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
- Learn and obey all traffic signs. If you drive past a wrong-way sign, turn around immediately. When you see a posted red sign, think: “Stop.” “Do Not Enter.” “Wrong Way.”.
Also in Collier County, a driver was caught on video cruising down the sidewalk next to Livingston Road.
Collier County Sheriff’s Office did not have reports of either of these incidents.
