Estero’s ‘Orchid Lady’ spreads happiness in a beautiful way
ESTERO, Fla. – Neighbors within the Grandezza community of Estero know Sharmin McKenny as the “Orchid Lady.”
For 10 years, McKenny has led the “Orphan Orchids Project” and took care of flowers left behind by snowbirds. The project has grown to include more than 150 orchids that now dot the Grandezza landscape.
“We have a lot of people that go up north during the summer and they didn’t know what to do with their orchids,” McKenny said. “They’d throw them away and I’d hate to see an orchid get thrown away.”
Some of the orchids are also planted in memory of loved ones who have passed. During peak blooming season, McKenny also leads tours throughout the golf course to tell people about the different types of orchids.
“I like to make people happy and this is one way I can share my happiness with others,” McKenny said.
