Federal judge rules DACA illegal, blocks new applications
CNN — A federal judge in Texas ruled that Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) the Obama-era program shielding certain undocumented immigrants from deportation is illegal on Friday. He also blocked new applicants.
The ruling made by Judge Andrew Hanen stops future applicants. This does not immediately cancel current permits for hundreds of thousands of people, however it does leave them in a legal in between, as reported by CNN.
DACA was created in 2012 to provide temporary reprieve to undocumented immigrants who were brought to the U.S. as children. This group is often described as ‘Dreamers.
Despite the fact that is has been almost a decade since DACA was created, it is still one of the only signs of potential relief for undocumented immigrants looking to remain and work in the US.
