FSW softball faces off against Olympic Canadian team

The number three ranked Canadian softball team is one of the best teams in the world and is preparing for the Olympics. Now they have taken on the Florida Southwestern Bucs these past two weekends.

With the Olympics right around the corner, the Canadian softball team had a problem. They had not taken the field against someone other than themselves since September 2019.

“We have scrimmaged a ton but at the end of the day that does not re-create the same environment as it does playing another team,” Team Canada Softball Head Coach Mark Smith said.

Since our neighbors to the North would be calling the City of Palms home for their Olympic Training camp they didn’t need to look far for a first opponent.

“To play a scrimmage against Team Canada that is just so much fun. It is so much more fun than practice to be honest,” FSW Freshman OF/C Charlotte Drijvers said.

As the number two junior college team in the country the Bucs couldn’t say yes to a matchup any faster.

“You know it’s a privilege to watch these players,” FSW Softball Head Coach Robert Iamurri said.

Watching and maybe more importantly learning from the future olympians.

“I know I learned a lot from watching people older than me and better than me that I watched in college so I think if they are wanting to learn and grow I think it’s a great opportunity for them to,” Team Canada OF Victoria Hayward said.

For the Bucs who are on an 11-game winning streak these scrimmages were more about the experience than winning.

“They are a contender to win the Olympics so when you are playing world class players in your sport it is just such an honor to step on the field and actually see them live and play against them live,” Coach Iamurri said.

A game that can only push these two closer to their championship aspirations.

“Hopefully for them it is positive, I know for us it is and hopefully it benefits their preparation as they go forward as well,” Coach Smith said.

The Bucs are back in action at home on Tuesday while team Canada will head up to Gainesville to take on the Florida gators as they continue to prepare for the Tokyo Olympics.
