FWC officials share tips to stay safe during snakebite season

While you might be on the lookout for snakes outside, you never expect to see one in your own car.

Sammie Varela was digging through for a tool when he felt a sting.

“Well initially you don’t feel it right away. It takes about a minute or so then you feel like a burn, a real hot burn,” he said.

“Then all of the sudden blood started coming out of my arm and what not. I just couldn’t believe it.

A Pygmy rattlesnake was hanging off of his arm.

“It got me right here in the right forearm here. As you can see I still have some dry stuff but it hurts so bad that to be able to clean it off it hurts. It hurts really bad,” Varela said.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission said being bitten by a venomous snake is rare.

“So number one is try to remain calm, and call for help immediately. You don’t want to accelerate your heart rate, that will just draw the blood to spread that venom further into your bloodstream,” advised FWC spoke-person Adam Brown, in case you are bit.

Pygmies and other venomous snakes can be found all over Florida. Brown said they usually make their homes in wooded areas. It’s best to avoid them if possible.

“Most of the time that snake is going to go ahead and move away from you, move on. It does not want confrontation with people, that’s the natural behavior,” Brown said.

The pigmy rattlesnake is one of six venomous snakes in Florida. FWC advises if you are bitten, you should get medical attention immediately.
