Man crashes truck into Alva pond
ALVA, Fla. – An Alva man received a weekend surprise Saturday when he witnessed a gold truck driving around his property and taking a nose dive into his pond.
The pickup truck went into the pond around 4 p.m. at a home off North River Road in Alva on Saturday.
Hugh Heiler and his wife were sitting inside their home watching television Saturday afternoon when his wife noticed a car driving around their yard.
“It came up around this side and I saw it happen too, it just went right down the bank into the water,” said Heiler.
As the driver was going around his yard for the second time, Heiler saw the car take a nose dive into his shallow pond. He immediately called 911.
“We saw the passenger door open and he pulled himself out and was hanging off the side of the truck, just hanging there,” said Heiler.
First responders arrived quickly and pulled the man out of the shallow water to safety. While the rescue was occurring Heiler and his neighbors noticed they recognized the man being saved.
“He used to do lawn, landscape work for me and my neighbors,” said Heiler.
Heiler and others who have used the man’s lawn services in the past say the he hadn’t been seen in the area in about two months. They said they were surprised to see him in such a dire position today.
Heiler said the man wasn’t cooperating when first responders tried loading him into an ambulance on scene.
“He was combative a little bit when they put him on a stretcher to take him away. They had to strap him down real good,” said Heiler.
It’s unclear if the man suffered any injuries or if he’s facing any charges in connection with the crash.
