Otters test positive for COVID-19 at Georgia Aquarium
ATLANTA, Ga. – Multiple otters tested positive for COVID-19 at the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta after showing symptoms, the aquarium reported Sunday.
Officials said the otters started showing mild respiratory symptoms like sneezing, runny noses, coughing, and tiredness.
Aquarium staff did not specify the number of otters infected but said they are older Asian small-clawed otters that do not make direct contact with the public.
“Our Asian small-clawed otters are under very close monitoring by veterinarians and animal care team members. They have displayed only mild symptoms and we expect them all to make a full recovery,” said Dr. Tonya Clauss, vice president of animal and environmental health at Georgia Aquarium in a statement. “We are providing supportive care as needed so they can eat, rest and recover.”
In a statement posted to the Aquarium’s Facebook page, officials said the otters may have contracted the virus from an asymptomatic staff member.
The animals were taken off exhibit while they recover.
