Punta Gorda mask mandate set to expire this month

PUNTA GORDA, Fla. — Residents and visitors of Punta Gorda will no longer be required to wear a mask if city officials choose to let the citywide mask mandate expire on April 30.

The Punta Gorda City Council met on Wednesday, April 7, and discussed the upcoming mask mandate expiration.

Some city officials said that they don’t have the enforcement authority to require masks and that it puts local police officers in a difficult position.

If the mask mandate is not on the City Council agenda before April 30, it will expire.

City officials are considering if they want to have a meeting regarding the mandate in the next couple of weeks.

If the mandate ends up expiring, the city manager said it will still be recommended.
