Scammers targeting job seekers with hidden malware

LEE COUNTY, Fla.– The Lee County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a new unemployment scam.

Malware is being hidden in links for employment opportunities, according to law enforcement.

Job seekers will receive a message about an employment opportunity, usually in their chosen field.

Hackers will include a zip file that they claim contains information related to the position but it is a phishing scam, officials said. Don’t open the file, it will infect your computer or phone.

Here are a few tips on how to protect yourself:

  • Don’t click links or open attachments found inside unsolicited messages or emails. They could be malicious and infect your device with malware.
  • Research companies before applying for a job. Make sure the company you are applying to it legitimate.
  • Don’t give out any personal information to people you don’t know.
  • Watch for grammatical errors, real companies would be careful with their spelling and grammar
