Shot in the heart: Who killed a pregnant mother in Bonita Springs?
LEE COUNTY, Fla. – 25-year-old Destiney Bocanegra was so excited to bring another child into the world.
The Lee County mother already had a 4-year-old son, Mikey, when she was murdered. She died protecting him from bullets flying in his direction.

“He knows,” explained Lisa Vega-Alva, Destiney’s mother, in an interview with Crime Stoppers. “He knows that she’s gone. And we have to teach him that she’s up in heaven and she’s his angel.”
Destiney had just left Chuckie Cheese with her family on April 21, 2018 when she was gunned down in a drive-by shooting near Matheson Avenue and Goodwin Street. She was shot in the heart while blocking her son. Destiney lost the baby she was carrying.
“When she heard the gunshots, she dove toward Mikey to block him and she ended up dying with him in her arms, to save him,” wept Selena Alva, Destiney’s sister.
Destiney’s boyfriend was also shot. He was left in critical condition but survived.
Over the last three years, tips have trickled in to law enforcement about the case, but not enough details and evidence have been collected to get the killer in cuffs.
The young mother’s family hopes someone will come forward with information about the murder so they, especially her son, can really begin the grieving process.
“I beg you to give us that peace, to give us that closure, that I need, that my family needs,” Destiney’s mother cried.

Mikey visits his mother’s grave often so he can be reminded of Destiney and realize how much she loved him.
If you know anything about the crime, even if you feel like it’s small or unimportant, please reach out to SWFL Crime Stoppers. You can always remain anonymous and receive reward money. All tipsters are eligible for a cash reward of $3,000 from Crime Stoppers and $2,500 from the Alva family.
