South Fort Myers alum Sammy Watkins signs new deal with Ravens
FORT MYERS, Fla. – From one Super Bowl contender to another.
South Fort Myers High School alumnus Sammy Watkins made his signing with the Baltimore Ravens official this week ending a short period of free agency.
“Going through this process and knowing I was going to be a free agent, you look at a lot of different teams and there was one team that stuck out and that was the Ravens,” said Watkins at an introductory press conference on Monday.
The Ravens also offered Watkins something no other team could, a chance to play under offensive coordinator Greg Roman who coached Watkins in Buffalo.
“I just can’t wait,” said Watkins. “I think he’s going to utilize us in so many different ways.”
Getting a chance to play with former NFL MVP Lamar Jackson also doesn’t hurt, according to Watkins.
“I think Lamar [Jackson] is going to go out there and kill it and throw for however many yards he’s been doing and scoring touchdowns,” Watkins said. “I just want to be a part of something special and I think we’re going to get the job done.”
After playing in back to back Super Bowls, and winning Super Bowl LIV in Miami, Watkins thinks he still has a lot left in the tank and a lot left to prove.
“I just think it’s time for the world to see Sammy Watkins, the one that was balling out in college and running around the field having fun and I think I’m that guy,” said Watkins. “But I just have to put a healthy season together.”
Injuries have plagued Watkins throughout his career, however, the veteran receiver said his new coaching staff in Baltimore has promised to keep Watkins healthy by limiting his intensity on the practice field.
