EAST NAPLES, Fla. – A 16-year-old girl is in critical condition after a driver allegedly hit her near U.S. 41 and Pineland Avenue in East Naples Sunday, according to investigators.
The teenager was attempting to ride a bike across U.S. 41 when the driver hit her, officials said. Florida Highway Patrol said the driver did not stop.
Troopers said they have a suspect vehicle impounded but they are still investigating.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP)— Investigators have matched DNA evidence from a 1985 kidnapping, sexual assault, and death of a 17-year-old Florida girl to an inmate who was already serving two life sentences in Michigan on sexual assault charges, according to officials.
David Nelson Austin, 59, has been charged with first-degree murder, armed kidnapping and sexual battery in the stabbing death of Leslie McCray, Jacksonville Sheriff’s Chief T.K. Waters announced in a news conference on Thursday.
McCray’s family has been waiting almost 36 years for a breakthrough in the case.

LEE COUNTY, Fla. — A Fort Myers man is behind bars for arson and tormenting an animal, officials said.
Christian Cintron lives at 3572 Central Avenue and NBC2 crews were at the same address yesterday for a fire. Rescue crews were on the scene and crime scene tape was up.
A dog was rescued from the fire, but no one was hurt, rescue crews said.

NORTH PORT, Fla. — A North Port man accused of beating and stabbing a homeless man was arrested and faces two charges: attempted armed robbery and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, officials said.
John Uzzardi, 57, allegedly beat and stabbed the man over $40, officers with the North Port Police Department said.
The victim said three people attacked him at Veteran’s Park on July 31. He told officers that he recognized Uzzardi and also gave descriptions of the other two suspects.

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Detectives are searching for a suspect involved in a robbery at a Fort Myers Dollar General.
The Fort Myers Police Department said the man is a suspect in an open robbery investigation. The suspect is seen walking into the Dollar General located at 3409 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.
This happened at around 9:30 p.m. on Aug. 1, and he was seen leaving the store shortly after. FMPD said he was also seen snatching a victim’s wallet out of their hands.

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Police are searching for a man suspected of robbing a 7-Eleven gas station in Fort Myers Monday morning.
The robbery suspect allegedly took approximately $150 worth of lottery tickets from a cashier’s hand at the 7-Eleven at 2977 Cleveland Avenue around 8:30 a.m., according to the Fort Myers Police Department.
The man was seen getting out of a white minivan just before the robbery, police said.

LEE COUNTY, Fla. — A 30-year-old man accused of sexually battering a child under 12 years old was arrested on Wednesday, officials said.
Deputies were dispatched to a home in Lehigh Acres after a sex crime was reported, a spokesperson for the Lee County Sheriff’s Office said.
The suspect, Johnny Jackson, fled the scene before deputies arrived.
Deputies eventually caught up with Jackson and arrested him on probable cause.
Jackson faces a sexual battery and lewd and lascivious molestation charge, deputies said.

MARIANNA, Fla. (AP) – A former deputy in Florida received a 12-year prison sentence for planting drugs in drivers’ cars during traffic stops and then arresting them.
Former Jackson County Deputy Zachary Wester did not speak at Tuesday’s hearing, The Associated Press reports.
