Top 75 ranked FGCU golf gears up for home tournament
LEE COUNTY, Fla. – The golf world has all their attention fixated on The Masters this weekend, but for FGCU, they are looking ahead to Monday.
The Eagles fresh off their highest ranking in division one history are gearing up to host their one and only tournament beginning Monday and it could not have come at a better time.
In less than a year, despite a pandemic, a new-look team, and a compressed schedule, the FGCU men’s golf team has accomplished what no team before them has.
“You know you look at the environment that you are in and the competition, and you figure out a way to move up the ranks,” FGCU Men’s Golf Head Coach Andrew Danna said.
The Eagles launching 188 spots from 257 a year ago to 69th in the country this week.
“It’s not something that happens overnight. It takes a long time,” Coach Danna said.
With four top five finishes in six tournaments, they have themselves on the cusp of an NCAA tournament berth.
“Honestly it has been more. More than what I had expected,” FGCU Sophomore Golfer Jon Hopkins.
The team will host their one and only tournament next week at their home course, the Old Corkscrew Golf Club.
“Everyone enjoys coming down here. I mean who wouldn’t enjoy coming down here honestly. It’s so nice to be able to host an event and host on a course that we are really familiar with we’ve been playing for a whole year,” Hopkins said.
Entering the week knowing that a successful showing could seal a spot on the national stage.
“Ultimately and we all know that we want to get to regionals and we all want to play at nationals but in order to do that we have to take it one step at a time and that starts here with our home tournament,” FGCU junior Golfer Brady Madsen said.
But regardless of next weeks results, the work to turn FGCU into a golf power is only just beginning.
“I think this program is heading in the right direction right now and I still think that we can get it up going to the next level and I think will see some good trends coming up here soon,” Madsen said.
The Eagles Old Corkscrew Intercollegiate from Estero will run Monday and Tuesday.
